METHODS FOR REMOVING GUM FROM CONCRETE

The best methods for removing chewing gum from concrete usually depends on how long the gum has been there and level of penetration into the concrete surface. If the chewing gum was left not long ago and it has not penetrated the surface yet, we might be able to remove it by covering it with ice until it freezes, then scraping the gum off with a metal putty knife.

The ice forces the gum to freeze into a more forgiving substance compared to a gooey and sticky glob. Once that happens, we slide a putty knife or scraper directly under the gum residue. After that we slide the scraper slowly beneath the gum and the whole piece should peel right off the concrete.

The above method is only possible with brand new gum.

When we remove chewing gum that has turned black, or is already smashed down into the concrete surface, we use a hot water pressure washer with the heat dialed up to 200 Degrees to melt the chewing gum. For this type of gum removal, we do not use high pressure because that could damage the surface of the concrete!

Our crew never uses any more pressure than needed to clean commercial concrete. These types of surfaces can be destroyed much easier than most people think, especially if they’re only a few years old. Concrete can need up to 100 years to cure completely. That is why we always use hot water and the least amount of pressure possible for our gum removal service.
